CERTALDO

The highest part of the city is the oldest and most beautiful. Here at the beginning of 1300 was born the author od the “Decameron”, Giovanni Boccaccio. You can go up using the handy funicular that leaves from the homonymous square.
In this town there is the railstation that we suggest if you think to go to Florence without car.
In the month of July there is "Mercantia"and every street corner is filled with artists and performances that make unique the atmosphere of this small medieval town.

SIENA
Distance: 54 Km - Travel time: 1h

It lies on three hills between the Elsa valley and the Arbia valley. Famous for its Piazza del Campo, where 2 times a year takes place the "Palio", is famous worldwide for its artistic beauty. Climbing the 503 steps of the Torre del Mangia you can enjoy a breathtaking view over the roofs, the towers and on the profiles of the rolling green hills.

Leaving behind Siena and driving to the south-east towards Monteroni d'Arbia, we reach the territory of the Crete Senesi, where are the towns of Asciano, Buonconvento, San Giovanni d'Asso, the famous Abbey of Montoliveto Maggiore and the mystical Abbey of Sant' Antimo.
This places offer views of incomparable beauty and the subsoil produces truffles of renowned quality.

During the spring ans the summer you can watch the "poor theather” in Monticchiello: all the inhabitants of the village become actors to show images and stories of peasant life belonging to their rural traditions

Coming back to San Gimignano, you have absolutely to stop at Monteriggioni. Looking at it from afar it seems that the time has stopped in the Middle Age.
You can experience a return to the past during the summer with the medieval festival.

Before going on to Florence and especially if you love wine, take a break in the Chianti region and visit Castellina, Radda, Panzano and Greve in Chianti and the many castles scattered in the area.
